LET’S TALK ABOUT: CLIMATE ACTION!

We are already experiencing the impacts of climate change. Milwaukie has led the State of Oregon and many places across the country in climate action goals and that work must continue at a rapid pace.

We have to mitigate greenhouse emissions within the city, adapt to the changes we already see in our environment, and capture greater levels of carbon and emissions.

You can find out more about the City’s work HERE.

Some Ideas I’m Excited About:

Energy:

  • Partner with PGE to expand solar microgrids on City buildings.

  • Incentivize residential installation of solar microgrids.

  • Incentivize residents to join City in commitment to 100% local, renewable energy.

Waste Management:

  • Incentivize residential adoption of alternative waste programs that keep hard to recycle items out of the landfill.

  • Recruit recycling/found items retailer to locate in City.

Transportation:

  • Partner with PGE to access federal infrastructure funds to create key charging zones for electric vehicles and bikes.

  • Pilot covered bike path with solar energy grid.

Environment:

  • Increase drought tolerant plants and trees that are native to our bio-region.

  • Require new commercial construction to include a percentage of eco-roof coverage, embed in Urban Renewal Area planning.

  • Work with neighborhoods to develop food forests.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Identify heat islands across the city and work with local neighborhoods to design place-making improvements that increase the tree canopy and reflect heat in warmer months.

  • Connect neighborhoods with Community Emergency Response Teams to develop preparedness plans.

  • Invest in solar microgrids and battery storage as part of neighborhood hubs project planning.

Policy:

  • Explore opportunities to support indigenous landback movement.

  • Audit all City use of fossil fuels to identify additional areas of divestment.
